Envelope liners are one of the most impactful yet often overlooked details in a wedding invitation suite. They elevate the moment your clients or their guests open the envelope. They also help every suite feel intentional, refined, and visually cohesive. Whether you are creating a floral pattern, a watercolor wash, a venue illustration, or a modern abstract print, liners add a layer of luxury that clients truly appreciate.
If you are a stationery designer looking for a reliable and streamlined way to produce professional envelope liners, PrintsWell Fulfillment is an excellent partner. They offer consistent print quality, accurate templates, dependable trimming, and a simple ordering process. They also provide envelopes and envelope liners which makes them a convenient one stop shop. This blog walks you through exactly how I design and print my A7 Euro flap envelope liners using Adobe Illustrator and PrintsWell Fulfillment from start to finish. This guide is written with beginners and experienced designers in mind and breaks down the entire workflow in a clear and easy to follow format.
Why PrintsWell Fulfillment Is My Go-To for Envelope Liner Printing
Before getting into the technical steps, it helps to understand why PrintsWell is such an ideal choice for envelope liner production. As stationers, we rely on trusted vendors who support our quality standards and streamline our workflows. PrintsWell fulfills both of those needs.
Here are the key reasons I consistently choose PrintsWell for my liners.
One-stop-shop convenience
PrintsWell offers both envelopes and envelope liners. This means you can order everything you need from one reliable source. There is no need to work with separate envelope and liner vendors which simplifies production and reduces turnaround time.
Reliable templates for exact sizing
Their design templates take the guesswork out of sizing. You can download an A7 Euro flap liner template directly from your PrintsWell account which allows you to design inside a precise framework that aligns perfectly with their cutting equipment.
High quality paper
I always order my liners on their 80# Text Weight Eggshell Ultra White card stock. It has just the right amount of thickness for luxury suites without adding unnecessary bulk. The eggshell texture also pairs beautifully with their 120# Eggshell Ultra White card stock that I use for the majority of invitation suites.
Optional envelope lining services
If you want PrintsWell to adhere the liners to your envelopes for an additional fee, they can do that. I personally prefer to adhere the liners myself but it is very helpful that this service exists for designers who need it.
Beautiful print results
The color output, sharpness, and trimming are consistently excellent which is incredibly important for stationery designers who offer premium products.
With that foundation in place, we can move into the step by step process of designing and printing your liners.
Step One: Accessing PrintsWell’s A7 Envelope Liner Template
Every successful liner begins with the correct template. Using the official PrintsWell template ensures that your design will be trimmed and sized correctly which prevents issues like uneven borders or misalignment inside the envelope.
To access the template, follow these steps:
1. Log into your PrintsWell Fulfillment account.
2. Locate the menu at the top right and click the section titled Need Help.
3. Scroll down to the heading Print Ready File Requirements.
4. Under that heading, click the link titled Templates.
5. Download the A7 Euro Flap Envelope Liner template.
This file opens directly in Adobe Illustrator and includes trim lines and bleed recommendations which provide a clear guide for placing your artwork.
Step Two: Setting Up Your Liner Artwork in Adobe Illustrator
I create all of my liners in Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator provides clean vector control, easy resizing, accurate alignment, and professional export options. It also allows you to work with artwork that you have licensed through artists, Creative Market, or Etsy which is where most of my artwork comes from.
Before you start designing, confirm that your document is sized correctly. PrintsWell requires the A7 liner artwork to measure 7 inches by 9.25 inches before bleed. This exact size ensures that the liner reaches deep enough into the envelope and sits flush along the edges of the Euro flap.
After confirming the size, you can add the template on top or below your artwork layer to keep everything aligned.
Step Three: Designing Your Envelope Liner
Once your document is set up, you can begin designing your liner. This is the creative part of the process and is often one of the most enjoyable steps. You can use purchased artwork, vector illustrations, watercolor elements, or pattern files. You can also create your own artwork inside Illustrator.
Here are helpful tips for designing beautiful envelope liners:
Cover the full template area including bleed
Make sure your artwork extends beyond the trim line and fully covers the bleed area. This prevents any unwanted white edges after trimming.
Be mindful of the top flap curve
Euro flap envelopes have a rounded top. Avoid placing important focal points or text in this area since it will be partially hidden when the liner is adhered.
Adjust the scale of your artwork
Large scale florals feel romantic and soft while small repeated patterns feel modern and structured. Try adjusting scale and orientation to see which version feels best.
Check color saturation
Textured paper like eggshell absorbs ink differently than smooth stock. Slightly boosting saturation can help delicate designs print with more impact.
Use high resolution artwork
If your artwork is raster based, aim for 300 DPI or higher. Crisp artwork is essential for professional results.
Once your design fills the template and looks intentional and cohesive, you can begin preparing your file for export.
Step Four: Adding Bleed and Exporting Your PDF
PrintsWell requires a bleed of 0.125 inches on all sides of every print ready document. Bleed ensures full edge to edge printing even after trimming. This small but important detail makes a significant difference in the final appearance of your liners.
To add bleed to your file in Illustrator:
1. Select File
2. Choose Document Setup
3. Locate the Bleed section
4. Enter 0.125 in for each side
5. Click OK
Your document will now display a red box that outlines the bleed area. Make sure your artwork fully covers that area before exporting.
When you are ready to export your file, use the following settings which align with PrintsWell’s requirements:
1. Select File
2. Choose Save As or Save a Copy
3. Select Adobe PDF
4. Choose the preset titled PDF X 1a 2001
5. Open the Marks and Bleeds tab
6. Check the box titled Use Document Bleed Settings
7. Export your file
PDF X 1a 2001 is a standard preset that flattens artwork, embeds color settings, and produces a stable and predictable print ready file. It is dependable and produces consistent results.
Once exported, open the PDF to confirm that the artwork extends into the bleed area.
Step Five: Uploading and Ordering Your Envelope Liners
With your print ready PDF complete, you can now order your liners through PrintsWell.
To place your order:
1. Log into your PrintsWell Fulfillment account.
2. Click “Start Order”
3. If you are ordering envelopes with liners, click “Envelopes” under “What type of product do you want to order?”
4. Select the A7 envelopes you wish to order and the quantity
5. After you make your envelope addressing selections, click “Yes” when asked “Would you like liners for these envelopes?”
6. Select the card stock you wish to use for your liners
7. Select ‘Yes’ or ‘No” when asked about if you would like PrintsWell to adhere the liners for you.
8. Upload your PDF file.
I always choose 80# Text Weight Eggshell Ultra White for every liner project. This card stock has the ideal thickness for professional envelope liners and prints beautifully. The eggshell texture provides a soft and tactile finish that perfectly complements luxury wedding stationery.
Once your selections are complete, you can finalize the order.
Step Six: Choosing Whether to Have PrintsWell Adhere the Liners
PrintsWell offers an optional service where they can adhere the liners into the envelopes for you. Some designers choose this option because it saves time and allows them to deliver fully assembled envelopes to clients.
I personally prefer to adhere my liners myself for several reasons.
● I like having full control over placement and alignment.
● I prefer using my own adhesive method.
● I often wait to adhere liners until all invitation components are finalized.
● I enjoy the hands-on aspect of the process.
There is no right or wrong choice here. It simply depends on your workflow, your schedule, and your personal preferences as a designer.
If you choose to have PrintsWell adhere them, you can check that option during the ordering process as mentioned in the section above.
Step Seven: How to Adhere Envelope Liners at Home
If you prefer to install your own liners, you can do so easily and professionally with the right adhesive. My go-to tool is the Scotch Advanced Tape Glider. This adhesive gun applies a clean, even layer of double sided tape that adheres perfectly to cardstock without creating bumps or wrinkles.
Here is exactly how I adhere my liners:
1. Slide the liner into the envelope to confirm the fit.
2. Fold the flap and envelope liner to crease.
3. Open back up and use the Scotch ATG gun to apply double sided tape to each edge of the liner.
4. Close the envelope flap again and press firmly to secure it.
This method produces clean, professional liners that look incredibly polished inside any A7 envelope.
I have several videos of this process on my Instagram (@juliakaydesign) if you wish to see a video tutorial!
Additional Tips for Success
Here are a few extra guidelines that can help your liners print and assemble beautifully.
● Use a consistent file naming system to stay organized.
● Save artwork layers in Illustrator for easy adjustments later.
● Order a test print when trying a new color palette or paper texture.
● Coordinate your liner design with envelope color, wax seals, and ribbons for a cohesive suite.
● Make sure the artwork you license allows for commercial use.
Small habits like these can streamline your workflow and help you produce elevated, reliable results for every client.
